|
|
I dunno if it's a graphics card incompatability or that somehow my computer jumps into safe-mode then crashes.. but here's what happens:
I load SL I get the welcome screen. Then about 30%-40% of the time, when I press connect, I don't go to the loading bar. Instead my computer locks up. Then about 30 seconds later my screen jumps to 400x600 and freezes. It looks like safe-mode would appear. But everything is frozen & locked. The only option is to press power and reboot my computer.
Other times this happens: I click connect, and SL begins connecting. And either sometime during the connection process or right after I am inworld, the screen does the same 400x600 jump and the comp freezes.
As far as I can tell it happens randomly. Some times I have other programs running, sometimes SL is the only program.
The way I can reduce the problem is when I load SL, let it sit without moving the mouse until the entire program loads. Then while praying, I click connect, and don't move the mouse at all. then once inworld, I dont move or do anything for several minutes.
... although it still happens....
It's such a huge pain when trying to perform, because for example, if I'm streaming live, then SL crashes.. .and I go to reload SL to log back on... this problem occurs which means I have to turn off my computer, and i lose the stream once again.
Does this happen to anyone else? I have a feeling it's a graphics card related issue. _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

I finally dialed the Geek Patrol so now it's going to cost $150 minimum to find out what's wrong with mine and it will probably require parts. It'll run for a varying period and then freeze. I've cleaned all the filters, etc. After it freezes, it won't power up again for about thirty minutes or so and then it'll run for about 24 hours or so.
I only thought I hated PCs when I just used them at work. To really develop a full sense of loathing, one has to have one at home and depend on it for something. In the year and change that I've owned it, the PC has crashed more than the sum total of every Mac I have ever owned and that goes back over twenty years.
If you can possibly afford it, get yerself an iMac for your audio stream as Nicecast is ultra-smooth to set up and your jams won't die when SL and/or your PC crashes. _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

ummm... I got a Dell dude?
Yeah, I do seriously think now it's an overheating issue now that you mention it. I have a gateway thats half as good as the dell im on now, but doesn't run into that safety mode problem everr... and that's cause it rarely gets hot. this dell im on not gets hot. So I'm guessing that as I load up SL and the harddrive starts turning and the fan goes up a notch, I may be getting kicked into safety mode cause my computer is trying to protect itsself.... good thing my computer doesnt try to protect itself by shooting eye-slicing lasers at me like in resident evil.
Any recommendations for a cooling aperatus? _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

what dell do you have?
and in SL click on about and copy the specs there so I can have a idea what we can do for you.
with the specs I can maybe guide you to what to do to help it out. Also what size case about?
like mines 30" tall and 34" deep have massive fans on it, it stays cooler than the room _________________ "Being drunk is a good disguise.

Distilled, the box overheated and apparently damaged something on the mobo. The tech will be back out on Monday morning as it has to be down for about an hour before it can be powered up so he can do more diagnostics. Everything else in the box has been swapped out without resolving the problem so it's definitely on the mobo. Whether the CPU goes too remains to be seen so it's going to be somewhere between $200 and $500 in parts and it's already been $180 in labor. Ah well....computers suck but we already knew that.
Gets all wistful...when my first serious band formed, it was me and two jazz guys and we decided to take our rigs to a party, no computers, no nothin'. We didn't have a set list and had never played together before. It ended up being about a three-hour jam and people were jumping around all over the place. It couldn't have been as cool as any of us remember it but someone stole the tape we made so it must have been halfway decent. Sure would be cool if that tape ever re-surfaced! _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

Double, your intel graphics card is incompatible with SL. I had almost the same machine you have and ended up having to buy a whole new laptop several viewer updates ago. Am now on a HP with a GeForce (Nvidia) card and the video driver failures you describe no longer happen.
(I tried contacting Dell to see if the video driver could be changed, it was a no go and I went round and round with them for days. That dell laptop was less than 6 months old) _________________ Just call me Jo

Right.... but SL works a majority of the time. LL did tell me that it's incompatable.... but I tried to explain to em SL is working on my machine. It's just randomly sometimes not working. I'm not understand what's the thing that's causing the trigger to make it do that safety mode jump-n-lockup.... but I'm sort of deducing that it's due to heat.
but basically once it happens, and I restart, SL works fine again. _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog
