Doubledown's Sooper-Dooper Tip #3 - Effective & Ineffective forms of Promoting Events

You want to get people to your event? What are the best methods? And what are just time-wasters and alienators? (keep in mind I am only listing free methods)

Effective:
-Event Post in Search
-Group Notice (with date, time, event in title)
-Group IM minutes before the event with SLURL
-Personal IM invites to people you know WITH SLURL
-Prim invitations (with landmark giver) or texture flyer given to buddies with personal IM asking to display on their land
-Chatting with people about the event
-Event Poster at the event location
-Hovertext with event info above your avatar
-Info given to someone with a relating blog

Barely effective:
-Forum posts (depending on what forum that may be)

Alienator:
-Conference IM
-Offering a TP before an IM to the person
-Going to public places and handing things to random people
-Going to public places and IMing them with the info

Ineffective:
-Notecard invitations
-Texture invitations
-Prim invitations
-Group IM when the event isn't immediately starting
-Personal IM invites without location, date, or time

Be very careful with the personal IM part of the above. I'll let it pass a couple of times if I get IMs via conference. If it continues, I mute 'em. I would rather play to an empty house than bug people I've friended.

Update: I see you differentiated individual IM from conference. I'd still be bugged if I got one either way tho. If I want to find some jams, I'll be looking in Live Music and already want to know where I want to go. Sure, that's not true for everyone but why risk alienating people?

P.S. Previous tip about the newspaper is excellent

Yeah, I'm speaking more about IMing actual friends, rather than just going through a buddy list and IMing "friends"

What I mean by a personal IM would be for example, if I knew I was going to perform something that you in particular would be interested in, I'd say "Hey Silas, I'm about to do a show, and what I have planned I know you'd enjoy, Stop by if ya can (SLURL)"
and yeah, I definitely wouldn't do this for every show... but a once in awhile to a certain select group of friends.

Note to anyone who might be tempted...unsolicited tps to events are an immediate removal from my friends list. It has happened more than once, that I've been clicking through blue notes, thanking venue tippers during an event, only to find myself suddenly at someone else's event. And this usually happens right at the worst possible time, just as one performer is wrapping up and the next is taking the stage.

I used to politely ask people not to do this, they said they would stop but persisted. Now, one unsolicited tp to an event and you're off my friends list. Which, btw, means that when I find myself with a slot to fill and looking for a musician, you won't be on the list for me to ask. You could be blowing gigs.

Right on ticious! And as far as I'm concerned, I don't even go so far as to ask someone if they'd like a TP. I wait for them to say to me 'TP please' (or limo or taxi or whatever they're calling em these days)

Bumping for Cristalle.

Also, gave me a chance to reread what I wrote approximately 2 years ago.   Most of it still rings true.
