Hi there, I just signed up because I wanted to reply to a post about streaming, that was an hour ago...got sucked in. I perform original comedy songs in SL and RL. I have been away from SL for a while and now I'm Back.
I'm a regular at The Bushy Beard and will be doing regular gigs there as well as some in other venues. Mostly I'm in the Bushy Beard, performer and punter.
My gigs are a mixture of comedy and music and include a lot of audience interaction, esp considering the nature of performance in SL. I teach comedy iRL and I am fascinated by (and quite nerdy about) The Performance Dynamic in SL - the thread I was compelled to reply to was regarding the ~30 second delay and mentioned "in the moment". Red Rag. Bull.

That's what we need around here, more comedians! I'm serious!
Anyway, I stopped here to see what the new post was ... now I'm curious as to your take on the 30 sec delay (which can be 10 sec or 45 secs ... cool when you can get 10).

thanks. Well glad you ask as I didn't leave a reply because that thread was very old.
We all know the Secret (timing) of Comedy.. and I reckon that the challenge of the delay in streaming to SL is one of the main reasons there aren't more comedians in SL. Maybe not in itself but certainly in the effect that has on performance dynamic. "In the Moment" is a key thing but how long is a moment? You can spread a moment over much longer than seconds. A moment is flexible. Strangely it also gives you a kind of time travel.
Now don't all do it, but one example of this is at the end of a particularly extended Rock n Roll ending. I can perform my ridiculous rock star cadence then pull up the stream - music fader to hear myself coming to the end so that I can perform onstage my Jump/ splits Rock God move roughly in time with audience. ( I know its not exact for all but much more live than the "live" stream) Yay animation etc... Fun for all.

Hi Wobbie, I'm pretty sure I've seen you at the Bushy Beard way back when. I also do a mix of comedy and music (in RL and SL), so I know what you're talking about. Someone who does standup comedy can use the voice chat, but that doesn't work so well for us who also do music.
I find that I've done enough shows that in a lot of cases I can predict how people are going to respond pretty accurately and "react" to it before I see it - or say things that usually fit with what others say well enough. A little of that, and a little of jumping on names as they come up on my screen seems to create a reasonable illusion of a live dynamic in spite of the delay. It's certainly not perfect, but it's the best I can do for the moment.
I don't mess with my avatar's actions during a show though. It's enough work to manage the stream, my keyboard, watch the screen and sing the songs without having to reach over and and make her dance. I set up my keyboard, set her going on a decent animation and let her go. Keeps her out of trouble while I'm trying to do a show. To check where the stream is, I
keep headphones plugged in but sitting on the desk. Usually, I can hear JUST barely enough to hear when the song is ending in SL.
