Personally I recommend using http://www.reaper.fm/ and use Ninjam as a MasterFX.
A nice guided tutorial to setting this up has just been posted on http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12578

Using Ninjam standalone is pretty simple.

Connect to a server anonomously and start jamming.

Any problems, the forum @ http://www.cockos.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10 are more than helpful. Just make sure to list your computer and audio interface configuration, not just a general "it don't work" question!

There are a whole load of other services now popping up in beta etc for doing this, with various solutions for overcoming the latency. Ninjam is free...be aware most of the others will be subscriber services eventually, so you may not want to become dependent on them just yet.
