I have been trying to help an old SL friend to get started singing in SL.

I have mostly spent time setting her up to stream but I need to find her a way to play music to sing along with.  I suggested she download midi's and sing along with those karaoke style.

I know the Karaoke deal is not that cool but she will have fun and she does have a great voice.

What are some ideas for music to accompany a singer?

yeah,   grab karaoke audio... you can find em on P2Ps and torrents mostly.    Obviously there's tons of different arrangements, so as you get em, sort em.

I think finding quality tracks is a problem.  Probly easier to find quality if you are willing to pay for them...

Just be careful, i know someone who tried to download some from some 'dubious' web sites, and it made a big mess on their computer.  All kinda junk  can get onto your comp if you're not careful.

Best bet is to talk to others who sing to backing tracks and see where they get theirs.

There's not a thing wrong with it.  MIDI is one of the most radically-cool musical inventions that changed music at the same level as what Les Paul did with an electric guitar.  Every major electric keyboard musician on the planet uses it and yet if one does it in SL then it's not cool.  The only thing that's not cool about MIDI tracks is failing to see the immense power of them.  It's all in how imaginatively you use them.

I think MIDI should be kept out of the discussion as to whether Karaoke is cool or not. You could produce a backing track with a child's plastic harmonica, or with the London Symphony Orchestra. I do, however, agree that MIDI is a cool musical invention.
