Anyone interested in a Texas Jam?

With all the dual streaming going on in SL and SL musicians gathering to jam in RL, those of us down South are wondering if there is anyone interested in meeting in the Dallas area for a Texas Jam. Although I'm not a SL musician, I'm a devoted supporter of SL music and while I can't and shouldn't ever sing, I'm a great organizer so if there is any interest out there in the SL music community for a Texas Jam, let me know and I'll work on setting one up.

If you are interested, send me an IM in world or just post something here.

Hope to hear from a lot of you soon!

Texas Jam

I'll be doing some meet-ups this summer.  Will be in Indianapolis in June and Montreal in July.   I'm looking forward to them.  I will make my bestest effort to be at a Texas meet-up... I think it's a nice south central location for people to make the drive or take the short flight in.  I'll throw around the idea to friends and musicians and I hope something develops.  Thank you Luka Very Happy
Norris Shepherd

Texas?  Sheesh.. there'd be enough people just from Texas I'd think.  Capos, TallGuy, Matthew Perrault, and others i can't htink of...

A bit far for me though.  d'oh!

You see King of the Hill this week where a Canadian moved into the house next to Hank Hill?  lol
ka-klick

I'll be coming down to Ft. Worth toward the end of July to visit the in-laws. I was just thinking I'd love to try and make something happen music-wise during that time.

Besides those mentioned, Melvin Took (Peter Greenstone) is in Austin - he hasn't been in SL for some time afaik, but he's brilliant.

I'd greatly welcome the chance to get together w/ any of the Texans who play out in SL while I'm there.

I also wouldn't mind working out something on the way down / and or back - OKC is often our overnight on the way down and Mid-Kansas on the way back.

Texas Jam up and running

The Texas Jam is up and running. It will be the weekend of October 23 - 26th in the Dallas area. There are about 14/15 musicians planning to attend and we are expecting about 80 to 100 listeners. If you are interested in more information, contact Luka Mikoyan or Renee Bimbogami inworld for a notecard with all the important details. We would love to see you there.
EvaMoon

I bet there will be more than 15 musicians there. I can't wait! I've already booked my flight and room. Though no roomie as of yet. (Waiting for a non-snorer  Rolling Eyes )
Silas Scarborough

I'm planning on the Texas Jam but not to play.  All of the acts are acoustic and my stuff would be incongruous.  However, what I do plan on doing is bringing some fairly high-end video gear.  What you all need to decide is if ANY focus of attention should be on the geekery needed to do that as the camera supports four XLR inputs which means I'd have two mikes for the stage and two more for ambient at the back of the room.  That kind of geekery may be more than you want to tolerate so please think it through now.  I don't want the Texas Jam to be about me or my gear but it could be a cool thing to video.
EvaMoon

Hey Silas, gear or not, it'll be great to meet you. I think there will be plenty of people there interested in gear and geekery.

There's a registration form (for both performers and non). Do you have it? I just found out about it yesterday. It includes sign up for a couple of meals and events they need head counts for.

I don't get why there isn't a central information place for the jam. I keep asking Renee for updated info and she wonders why I need more info than the Holiday Inn phone number and dates!  Who is going to spend for plane tix unless there is more to know: who has committed to going, is there a schedule for the musicians yet, how much and who pays for the ballroom, equip, yadayada.  I'm not the only one, everyone I have talked to has the same concerns.
EvaMoon

Really! I dropped Renee a notecard weeks ago letting her know I was coming but didn't hear a thing back. Then someone let me know I wasn't on the schedule and needed to register. That was the first I'd heard of it, though I was wondering.

It would be SO EASY to have a page somewhere about the event. Apparently there's a schedule and a bbq and a mexican dinner and a mixer. But I can't find out a thing about any of it.

Today's list of commited attendees: Bosco Constantine, Dallas Horsefly, Capos Calderwood, Raspbury Rearwin, Strummer Vultee, Morton Shamen, Damien Carbell, Ictus Belford, Maxamillion Kleene, EvaMoon Ember, Kim Seifert, Luka Mikoyan, Renee Bimbogami, Poppy McDunnough, Shadow Marlin, Phineas Fride, Gwampa Lomu, Minerva Macchi, Cryene Madonna, Katydid Something, Flaps Solo, Kimmie Rayna, Yummi Burrito, Dakari Harbinger and Angelwithahintoflife Pieterson, Lady Hightower, Amylyn Arcadia, Tantalus Nightfire, Charm March, Mia Kitvhensink, Moonbeam Meriman, Taunter Goodnight Roxy, Z Zerbino, Jupiter Neo, Silas Scarborough and me.  I am pretty sure Crap Mariner and Beth are going and I spoke to Woodstock Burleigh, Creola Deledda, and Doubledown Tandino who all expressed interest.

Creola is in New Orleans and wants to ride with anyone. There are quite a few music folks in Austin that hopefully will make it! Sounding more and more like a great party!
EvaMoon

Wow! That's quite a list! Incredible.
Silas Scarborough

Bibi has been doing lots of research on this.  I've been concerned about an SL hoax and Bibi has confirmed that people are putting money down to play there.  OK, they're serious!  (laughs)
Luka Mikoyan

I am so sorry for the confusion and lack of information. I started this and then had a medical emergency and have spent the summer without access to SL. Renee very kindly offered to step in and help and she has been working very hard.

EvaMoon, I’m so sorry you did not get information in a timely manner and Bibi, thank you soooo much for posting the information here. Now that I am back home, I will make sure that this forum is kept informed of what is going on so people can make informed decisions about attending.

Silas, we would love to have you AND your music. It isn’t about acoustic; it is about the joy all music brings so please, come play with us.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at revekka19@gmail.com or as Luka Mikoyan inworld if you have any questions. We would love to see you all in Dallas in October.

Thanks but I'm not trying to get into something about me playing.  I want to make sure it's ok with you all if I do the video as it would mean some possibly annoying cabling since I anticipate four microphones hanging from the camera.  Likely it'll be that I can bring video stuff or music stuff but not both and I'm pretty excited about doing some video.
Bibi Ballinger

I dunno about anyone else, but the thought of Silas and Kim doing House Of The Rising Sun is pretty exciting!!
Luka Mikoyan

We would love to have you videoing, Silas. We can work around cables. Thanks so much for offering to add that dimension to the Jam.
ka-klick

Wish I could come down. I'm almost tempted, but the timing is bad for me this time. My family and I were just down there visiting family and friends (we used to live in Ft Worth). Was great fun getting together w/ Matthew Perault while I was down there. Unfortunately it's in a period my wife can't take vacation, and it's the weekend we've got plans to have our annual Halloween party (and Jam). If it weren't for the party I'd still think hard about going. Hopefully this sort of thing will happen again soon. I know there are a lot of great SL performers and fans in TX and surrounding area.

Maybe we can try this out in a couple places around the country - I love the concept - instead of SLCC style (choose most expensive area and hotel) finding something more accessible and informal in a space people can afford.
EvaMoon

Oh c'mon Kaklick. You're this close to deciding to come.
Silas Scarborough

ka-klick wrote:

Yes, that's it exactly.  I can't stay in any downtown hotel and I suspect many other SL people cannot as well.

I've been thinking about playing and I come to this:  it'd be slutty not to bring the axe as that would invite conversation like gee, silas, why didn't you bring your axe.  That ain't right.  Doesn't change the logistical problems but it still ain't right.  I'm working on this.

Luka, this is going to be streamed into SL, right??
Luka Mikoyan

Yes, it will be streamed into SL. We are using the feedback from the Montreal Jam to try and make the SL experience better for listeners who can't be in Dallas. We will have a list of SL venues as soon as we have a final musican count. We will also have a schedule to post as soon as we have a final musican count.

Very cool.  Extend the virtual world.  Love it!

I've decided it would be too ambitious to try to video the entire show as twenty+ hours as that's a bit of a leap from the five-minute music videos I've done previously.  I'm concerned if I don't video everyone then why this person rather than that one.  I'm open to suggestions on that as I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

My purpose is to capture video for my own project so I'm wondering if there would be time either before or prob'ly better after the scheduled acts.  The reason is that I've got a contract out for a guy to murder me so I can be famous like James Dean even tho I suck.  I will die a young and beautiful avatar (laughs).
Luka Mikoyan

LOL, since you have gone to all the trouble of getting a contract for a guy to murder you, I'm sure we can arrange a time for you to do your thing with the video. I'll get with you as soon as the schedule is hammered out and we will pick the best time.
Silas Scarborough

Thanks!  I'll get the $10K lindens to you as soon as I can but things have been a bit hectic.  Bibi said if I don't play on Saturday then I die anyway as she has to leave on Sunday.
Bibi Ballinger

Wow, 26 musicians and a boat load of audience members are coming!  This is huge!  SL is crossing over to RL is a big way. Chicago is next, I believe.  Who knows where all this can lead!!!
Silas Scarborough

There's a 10,000-watt P.A. in my Bus and it'll be headed for Dallas in about three weeks.  Don't get all intimidated by the power as it won't be running anywhere near full blast.  What it will do is give excellent presence even at low volumes.

Ms Bibi did a very cool thing and arranged for me to play last on Saturday.  I was very concerned about playing in-between two acoustic acts as someone would come out of that feeling bad.  Dunno who but someone for sure.

We were talking with Ictus Belford the other day about my set flowing into another in which lots of people get onto the stage for an all-out jam.  I'm sure you know the song and now imagine a bunch of SL jammers doing it at the same time.

Drummers, bass players and other people who are in SL but do not gig:  be ready to play.  I've got the equipment to support you.  It's very important to understand there are no amplifiers and this means you could be playing your kick-ass drums right next to someone playing "Puff the Magic Dragon" and you'll both be fine as the audio levels will be worked out at the mixer.  There are NO individual instrument amplifiers.

If you think I'm any less scared of this than you then you're out of your mind (laughs).
EvaMoon

Is there going to be a kit/drummer there? That would be very cool.

I was sorry not to see Kim's name on the confirmed list. Is she not going to be there?
Silas Scarborough

Yes, the drum kit will arrive in the next few days.  I'm scrambling to get all the bits together and I think there's time.

That's a shame about Kim as she sounded very confident she would be there.
Luka Mikoyan

Looking forward to meeting you, Norris.  I've only just got back from getting my truck fixed for the second time since last week but now I'm confident it's ok for the drive.

The truck is 95% loaded and I'll roll in the morning, prob'ly not a lot before noon as I have some bizness with Guitar Center before I go.

I'll tweet my progress as I go along and I figure I'll arrive in Dallas on Thursday.

Post-edit:  It's a shame SLMC doesn't support the youtube function but you can catch the video blog of the Addison Texas Jam on my blog or on YouTube.  There will be loads more coming this week-end.

P.S.  It's unofficial as I don't represent the Texas Jam in any way.  I don't represent Scarborough either as I introduced myself as Reverend Sasquatch to some of the early arrivals and they weren't sure what to make of it.  That's ok, neither was I.  (laughs)

This was the most resoundingly cool thing I've seen in years and what put it way out there for a lot of listeners was the live video feed via USTREAM.  The first comment I heard from anyone who called was how much they liked seeing SL performers in an RL setting.
EvaMoon

Yes. Thanks to Gwampa Lomu for running the ustream all weekend (followed by Dakota after Gwampa left) and to Silas for bringing the awesome camera.

Nothing is ever perfect, but 26 musicians got to play a set over two days without getting off schedule and yet without such rigidity that there was no opportunity for a little jamming and spontaneity along the way. No small feat.

I'm so glad I got to be part of it and got to meet so many friends. I'm hooked.

Thanks to Renee and Luka for their hard work putting it together.

This was absolutely fantastic to get to watch for us back home too!!  Geez, it was an awesome set up and awesome show.  I dunno if you got numbers on folks listening, watching the video and chatting just like in an SL show, but when I was there it was damn near 200 in addition to the folks who actually came to Dallas!  And it won't surprise me at all if there were times that number was much higher!

EvaMoon wrote:

That goes double for us at home getting to watch!!!!  Great work!
Bibi Ballinger

What an absolute gas to be there!!  We learned so much and each one will get better and better but being noobs at this one was alot of the fun of it! There were no expectations and everything that happened was a gift.

I have never been in a room with so much love but then I had Silas with me so that was part of it.
Kim Seifert

This was without a doubt an amazing weekend.  Luka and Renee did such a phenomenal job of putting this together.  I cannot thank you enough for all you put into the jam.  Big muahs to Luka and Renee.  Funny thing happened at the airport.  I put that jar of Chipotle Sauce in my guitar case and forgot about it.  The guys at the x-ray machine didn't.  I thought they were gonna confiscate it and we were gonna have to duke it out.  I convinced them to let me have it.  Woot!!!

Thank you for having all of us!!! You totally Rock!
Morton Shamen

What a pleasure to meet you all, the event was everything I had hoped for and so much more. I have never been in a place with so much talent and love, an absolute joy. I'm already laying plans for Chicago, et al.
Hats off to Luka, Renee and everyone involved. See you all real soon.
Luka Mikoyan

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Oh my word! How to say thank you to all of you who came to Dallas? I’m not sure there are words but here goes. Dakota Pluto, LadyScarlet Gears, Sonny Trenchcoat, Avatar Quinzet, Ictus Belford, EvaMoon Ember, Zachariah Loon, Capso Calderwood, Damien Carbenell, Silas Scarborough, Bosco Constantine, Morton Shamen, Strummer Vultee, Maylo Lilliehook, Norris Shepherd, Max Kleene, Illegal Meskin, Katydid Something, Ric Rembrant, Mimi Carpenter, Taunter Goodnight, Dallas Horsefly, Matthew Perreault, TallGuy Kidd, Kim Seifert, Phinona Ember, and Raspbury Rearwin, YOU ALL ROCK!!!
Dallas was the most amazing musical weekend and it was because each of you so graciously shared your talent with all of us and we just can’t say thank you enough.

Thank you to all the listeners (I’m so sorry, I lost that list) who came and listened. You also rocked and made the weekend so much fun.

The biggest thanks to Renee Bimbogami for the amazing job she did of organizing this fun time.
Hope to see you all in TEXAS next year.
Norris Shepherd

If i had to leave after friday night's informal 'pass the mic', it would still have been a great weekend.

I did the same thing as Kim, except i must not be as good looking because my 150ml bottle of hot sauce was over the 100ml limit that you can stick in a plastic baggie.  Mine is in a garbage can somewhere....

Kim must be better at batting yer eyelashes at the security people than I am.

And on the flight home, i sat next to a girl wearing overalls.  I kidd you not.

I think Renee and Luka did an awesome job!  Also, everyone else there was willing to contribute.... and as far as i can see, everyone DID contribute in whatever way they could.
ladyscarlett

Sorry to see it end

Gah, it was so sad to have to leave.  And I had to leave so early, I didn't get to say goodbye to most people.  I did get to see Phineas before I left, but I missed everyone else.  And the same thing happend with me at the airport with the chipotle sauce, but they let me keep mine.  LOL.  Thought they were gonna strip search me for a sec though.
Slim Warrior

I So enjoyed watching this on ustream.. and yes like Tishe, when I was watching the numbers were staying around 160-200 at a time..

The musicians sounded fabulous and  REALLY nice to see KatyDid up on stage too on the Sunday. and of course all the others that I did manage to catch.

Silas Scarborough

Almost unanimously people were saying that no-one looked as anyone imagined they might. There's nothing bad about that but rather we don't at all appear through SL as people imagine we really are. What's important is that it doesn't matter to people at all.

Best Hair Award: Tie between EvaMoon Ember and Kim Seifert

Witty Lyrics Award: This is EvaMoon's to lose but we missed her set due to wicked behavior, ours not hers. What we did see is that Matthew Perrault is one funny sumbitch so EvaMoon has got a major contender for the prize.

Most Killer Musician Award: Beth Odets as her accompaniment on violin for many of the acts down there was tasteful, restrained, beautiful, imaginative or whatever the song needed. This lady can really play and she has one cool as hell looking violin.

Most Surprising Find Award: Taunter Goodnight (I'm not positive on her last name) has got a set of pipes that would make Janis Joplin smile. She's got huge power and excellent control and she's looking for backing. She's using back tracks now but she wants to learn guitar and/or get some bigger support behind her. I told her what Kim Seifert had done and they talked so I'm sure you'll be hearing more.

Coolest Dude to Meet Award: Ictus Belford. Everyone thought he had canceled but he showed up on Saturday during my set and we did "Make My Day" with Kim singing backup for him. Even now that brings tears to my eyes as this was dream come true stuff.

Coolest Chick to Meet Award: All of them. You don't seriously think I'm going to post a winner on this one, do you?

Most Insightful Cover Award: Max Kleene doing "We Can Work It Out." He's an amazing man and an extremely talented musician.

Performer of a Song Most Likely to Make People Fall out of their Chairs Laughing Award: EvaMoon Ember didn't get a fair shot at this as she did "Brazilian Wax" before many people arrived. Matthew Perrault won the award fair and clear, tho, as his song, "God is Going to *F-Bomb* You Up," gets it because it's more dangerous.

I do not mean to imply EvaMoon is not dangerous as you already know she's a dangerous beauty but, sadly, not one of my dangerous beauties.

Coolest Chick to Sit Next to in a Wild Texas Jam Award: Ms Bibi

Lady Who Traveled the Most Miles to Get There Award: angelwithahintoflife as she flew in from Ireland!

Consumer of Most Reefer Award: Yep, this one is mine. The only reason I mention it is that people may be thinking this is why my stuff was weak. Reefer has nothing to do with it but I don't want to get into the actual reasons in any public forum.

WTF, might as well give myself one. That's what awards are about, right??

Old Stoner Who Looked Coolest in a Skull Robe Award: Me (laughs)
