tips are ok, were thinking off creating a Basement Bargain TipJar,
people can decide then to tip the musician ( i dont wanna tell the audience what to do ) or the BBM tipjar.

That money will be divided to charity....

let me explain that.

I dont want money in RL either.

im not selling my music.
never registered my songs for copyrights.
wrote songs for others and gave them away.
did a lot of production work, mixing, mastering for others....

yes for free.

Can anyone else imagine Fyrm's lyrical observations set against Sound's madman guitar style? I think it would be good for at least one song.

That's quite a thought, Elvis.

Sound, do you want me to set up a chord structure, and put the lyric to voice as melody? It might be better if I keep away from my acoustic guitar so as not to clutter things up for you. Maybe just play some simple chords on keyboard. I think we might need the constraint of a regular beat - I could work to a simple drum rhythm from my electric piano. I would try to stay away from anything more exotic than a major or minor 7th, although maybe we could treat ourselves to the occasional diminished? The point is that I don't think we are ready for totally free improvisation at this point. We need a musical structure within which *you* will have the freedom to roam, guitar-wise. I would see myself as providing you with that structure.

Once I have the basics sorted out, I pass on to you. You would put in bass guitar, and electric guitar plus any additional sound effects that you felt might be appropriate? (My piano does a very nice fretless bass, actually, so let me know if you want me to put that in). Oh, on a technical point - I use Cakewalk's SONAR 7. We might want to think about our DAW compatibilities.

Now, I think to respond to Elvis' generous spirit of musical adventure here, we ought to open up the question of the song topic to suggestions from the forum. So if anyone has a topic or theme they would like to be addressed (could even be an object), post it up here. I'll pick the thing that sparks something in my head - might not be the thing that most folks want me to write about.

I can issue an ISRC code through my cottage publishing company, Lewis Music. I can even put a bar code on the mp3 if we want. We have to decide about this because we typically operate in two very different ways. My understanding is that you don't normally bother with this stuff. On the other hand, I am obsessive about it and would slap an ISRC code on the sound of a bee farting in a beer bottle if I had recorded it Smile

One last word, these things can never be guaranteed; it might work, it might not. But thanx, Elvis, for the suggestion.

It's wise to decide how to split up the writer's share and the publisher's share. The percentages can be anything you decide between you. 50/50 is good. The writer's is easy. The publisher's requires you forming a publishing entity. Don't know how it works across the Atlantic, but it cost about $300 to do it with BMI here in the states. That's the part that stops most musicians.

It doesn't matter until you want to sell your work. That includes releasing CDs. Let's say a tv show or film wants to use your track. Without the publishing info, they're sunk. It happens all the time.

You can keep your half of the publishing without having the entity. But as soon as an opportunity for airplay knocks you'll have to scurry to get it together. You don't know what to call your publishing entity till you really have one. You could assign it to someone who has it. But you're giving away that potential for income.

It's dry stuff. But it's the pipeline that sends money TO songwriters. Think about it. Guitarists will pore over literature to decide which expensive gear to buy. That's because musicians are taught how to spend, not receive.

That said. It's ok to write a song without having that stuff in place. It's a conduit for getting paid.
