Could use a Who's Who HUD

I don't know about the rest of you, but I could use a HUD that gives me a short bio on the active players in the music scene when they come into Chat distance when I'm onstage.

Norris came by today.  And, I know him.  And, we joke (though I could have given a better pitch to go listen to him... sorry Norris).  And, there are others.

But, often times, and with soooo many people involved, people stop by and I haven't a clue that they are Hosts, Venue Operators, Performers or DJs.

I suppose it would need an external database.  So, it'd be hard to implement and maintain.  But, it's just a thought.

oh ... but, I suppose that might be called a Promoter or Host, too Smile

lol.  I wouldn't worry about me Ray.. i usually go to shows to listen.. not so much as a promotional thing.  lol

but i do hear what you're saying.  I'm the same in that you like to make people feel welcome, and it's not even like seeing a face.. .it's just seeing a name.  And you think.. hmm... i know that name from somewhere...

Anyone give memory courses in SL?  and i'm not talking the RAM or GB kind of memory!

Damn, Norris. I thought you came to my show to fix my combined harvester tractor thingy. And all along it was the dulcet tones of the melody, you were after  Wink

Nice idea Ray...

Here would be my suggestion... if we could tie it into the SL music hall of fame, that would be easiest.

If the prims in the music hall of fame were simply named after the AV, with a notecard in each, a scanner script object could be placed in there to automatically scan for objects, grab the notecards, and upload the data to an external DB.
Then the HUDs could query via php to pull the info up, present with a list of names... not sure how I'd work the UI for the HUD, but... anywhere, there's an idea for making the updating a little easier.  Hall of fame already maintains a DB of sorts, so I think that would be the easiest way to go about updating and maintaining it.

Suggest it to music hall of fame, and tell ya what, I'll lend my scripting skills to the idea if people like it.

The FCMC does keep a database of artists, another of venue owners, and one of managers, agents, and promoters.  Also the web server space should anyone want to build such a thing for the artists..

Not to take anything away from the SL Music Hall of Fame, its a great initiative with a growing database, and may well serve quite adequately.

Pulling data down from a Web site into SL isn't hard and any reasonably good scripter should be able to do it.

Ya, that's even better, and is fairly easy to do.

I am not as keen on this one as you guys. I know this is just a thought you had pop into your head Ray but you didn't say why you want it? Is it because you like to give folks a shout over the mic to say hello if they are another musician and you are afraid you might miss someone out and upset them?

I think I have got enough on my mind already when on stage without worring about that. If I see someone and recognise them I always give them a shout out of mutual respect but if I don't see them or don't recognise them it doesn't really matter does it?

Laughing Yah, Djai .. it's just a thought that popped out of my head.  Wink

But, it is driven by two things ... one: my memory is lousy.  I'd say it's because I'm getting older.  But, I've been that way most of my life.  History was a nightmare, trying to remember all those names.  But, I digress.

Two: It might be a good place to get everyone in one spot, instead of spread all over the SL grid in their own little domains.  An avatar comes into range ... check the database ... found info ... pop up on screen .. save reference so you don't repeat again that set.

And, yes, I'm too busy too ... Lord knows I get goofed-up enough by the general chatter on screen without other stuff to contend with.  And, since I don't have groupies or hosts (not counting Ticious and Spiral on Tuesday nights ... I want to entertain them as much as the rest ... don't expect them to be "working", too), I really don't have anyone to send me info that they know I could use because I'm a scatter-brain.

And, yes, I like to give other performers a shout.  Especially if they support me with a donation!  Trouble is, on many Tuesday nights, it's like preaching to the choir ... eveyone there is in the business  Laughing

So, take it or leave it  Smile ... it's just a thought.

Fair enough...my memory is pretty bad too... Rolling Eyes

Could be useful for fans as well.

One thing that bugs me ferociously is listening to SL music on the radio and, unless you know them already, you have no idea who's playing.  Yeah, off-topic but somewhat related.
RayW

Hey, Silas ... I have a Rastor Stream Info display device that is very good at showing what's playing and what the last 5 played were.  Set it for the stream and you are in business.

Not sure, but I think it's free.
Silas Scarborough

Thanks but I mean for driving around in the car or pulling in SL music anywhere other than SL.  It's cool to be able to hear it but frustrating not knowing who's playing.

Don't know if this works ... but ... some of wht I found:
