Doubledown's Sooper-Dooper Tip #4 - Music Station on Land

Doubledown's Sooper-Dooper Tip #4 - A Music Station can make or break a Sale

Considering most product sales, and even consumer browsing happens when you are not there, its very important to keep the right impression even when you're not there.

I am a firm believer that music not only directly affects people on the obvious conscious level, but it also creates differences on the subconscious levels. Being a DJ in RL, I've experienced music making or breaking a party. Even at an event where you'd think the music isn't the most important aspect (for example, a wedding), trust me... the music is the factor that decides whether an event is good, bad, or ugly.

With that being said, picking the right audio station to have playing at your store is, in my opinion one of the most important things. The music will cause people to stay longer or leave quicker, get in a better mood or worse, and even create a preconceived notion about who you are as a business owner.

First: Pick music that appeals to the majority, not what you like most.
Country, Ghetto Rap, Hard Metal.... these are examples that may leave a bad taste in someone's mouth who might have been a potential customer. (seee Second). Whether you play music that are the billboard hits and everyone knows, or you want a more varied eclectic mix, make sure the music has a warm, welcoming feeling. Abrasive, hard music doesn't work as well... even if its good music. Find music that even a music snob, or someone that only has particular tastes, would still enjoy. Examples: Bob Marley, Foo Fighters, Aerosmith, Snoop Dogg, Parlament ..... even though some people may not prefer to choose to listen to these, they still wont mind hearing it.

Second: However, you also want to play music that relates to your products and your clientelle. Example: you WANT to have country music if you're selling bull riding supplies and cowboy hats. .. you WANT to have goth music if you're selling black eyelashes and devil tattoos.

Third: Pick a station that streams at 64kbps, nothing higher. It's rare, but approximately 1 out of 10 SLers cannot handle a higher quality stream, so 64 is good quality and works for everyone. Also find a station that is low on the commercials.

Fourth: Experiement with the music, and keep a log of sales in relation to the stations you play.... I guarantee you will see a spike while you have a certain station.

Fifth: Put the genre of music as a search word for your store. If someone's searching for that kind of music, they may stop in for a few songs.

So overall, I regard the music in the background of a shop as a very important element. Make a customer feel welcome, cool, and hip when they arrive.. even when you're not there.
