Get It Together 2: Christmas All Year ThroughHi All,
Earlier this year I instigated a collaborative recording project that resulted in the release of "Get It Together"; a song that was recorded remotely by 13 different SL musicians with all of the parts pulled together into a final mix by Toby Lancaster. We then distributed the finished track throughout SL with the hope of increasing awareness of the SL music scene to the wider population of SL. Not only did this project prove to be very successful but was also great fun and I am very proud of everyone who took part and those that supported the initiative. For more inforamation on the original GIT project please view this thread
http://slmc.myfastforum.org/about810.html
and download a copy of the finished track here
http://www.mediafire.com/file/knzmkilwniy/GetItTogether.mp3 .
After toying with a few ideas on giving the GIT project some longevity I have decided the time has come to give it another try and so I am happy to announce that this post marks the instigation of a second collaborative recording project with a new song.
I have prepared a new track entitled "Christmas All Year Through". "What a dreadful thought!" was Toby's comical initial reaction but I can assure you that despite the title the song is not about celebrating Christmas every day and the lyric is not at all cheesy and is not straightforward Christmas fare. While the thought of doing a Christmas track will instantly conjure up images of us all wearing thick sweaters and singing around an open fire in a cabin in the mountains I am asking you trust me when I say I have done my best to provide a quality song with melodic interest and a thought provoking lyric. The song is also purposefully quite different to GIT. I am hopeful you guys will do as good a job with this one as you did before.
I would like to invite SL musicians of all sorts to become collaborators on this recording. Once complete I will see that the track is again distributed for free but in this respect I will also be calling on everyone, both musicians and other valued members of the music community, to help me. I intend to distribute the song in the form of a christmas gift from the musicians of SL and for it to reach as many individual avatars in SL as possible. Like last time we will prepare a notecard of SL music scene information and a link to where the track can be downloaded but instead of distributing the notecard via a poster inworld I would like to recruit as many helpers as possible who will distribute the notecard to all their friends and to every single SL group they are a member of, whether it is related to music or not. Of course the majority of groups will require you to ask permission of the owner and may even require the owner themselves to send the notice to their group. Despite this I feel this will be an effective way of reaching the maximum number of residents with the track and will again give a boost to the general level of awareness of live music in SL.
The same plan used with the original GIT project will again apply this time round. All SL musicians who are active on this forum and others who do not post here are invited to contribute to a recording of this track. I will supply a skeleton piano track, a guide vocal, the lyrics and the chords. I will expect back from contributors a vocal performance of the song and/or one or more instrumental performances. Once I have all contributions returned to me I will work with my long term collaborator, Toby Lancaster, to snip them up and take what we need to make a mix so that we end up with a song that showcases as many different artists as possible. This time round the track is totally different to GIT and while it is tempting for me to try and guide people with my own thoughts of how it should end up it is imperative that I release creative control and let you all come up with what you feel is best. Just go for it and be creative!
In order to have some organization I will need to set a few groundrules as follows….
1. Please only musicians needed who can make a meaningful contribution. Use your own interpretation as to what a musician is. I am really really not making any judgement on what a musician is beyond saying that I am excluding a non musician sending in a track of them on a comb and paper. If you deem yourself a musician and you create music in any form then you are a potential contributor.
2. Record as much as you like for your contribution but depending on how many contributors are involved do not expect anymore than a sample of what you have sent in to end up being used. I give you my word that Toby and I will treat all contributions even handedly. Please please don’t anyone get all "me me me"about this. I am hoping that there will be enough contributions and people will be singing one line each. My vocal will be the first to be dropped if there are more singers than lines available. I am also aware that if we are innundated with contributions the track may suffer but I promise to do my best to produce a credible result.
3. The deadline is fairly strict in that the track must be ready to distribute before Christmas. The deadline for contributions is Friday 5th December 2008.
4. Copyright of the song itself is mine but I am giving all contributors permission to record. I will not be providing anything contractual beyond what I state here in public that the song is already copyrighted to me but I am giving full and free permission to all contributors to make their recordings. The resulting recording of the song is NOT copyrighted to me but is open for distribution. By contributing you are agreeing that your contribution can be distributed freely in this form.
5. Like before I will not expect any negative feedback on this forum regarding this project. I am not infringing your chance of free speech or diluting the democracy of this forum. I am simply going to make this project happen for the good of the whole SL music scene. If you don't agree with me or you have a problem with this project and what it is trying to achieve then please do not contribute.
6. You must be technically competant enough to be able to record your vocal and instrumental contributions in MP3 format at 128 kps and return them to me (email address will be in the contributors notecard I distribute) or give me a link where I can download them. I cannot get involved in everyone's recording techniques or handhold anyone through doing it...you have to know how to do this already.
7. I will provide a skeleton track on piano and vocal along with a few pointers. If you provide a vocal contribution be it the main melody or a harmony it is essential that you match my vocal phrasing as closely as possible. The reason for this is that when we come to match up voices and harmonies during the mix down any subtle differences in phrasing
are gonna stick out like a sore thumb. If you match my phrasing then it will be easier for us to pick out multiple voices for each line that are going to fit together.
8. Each contribution you make must be a separate MP3 file. If you decide to do a main vocal, a harmony and trumpet track these must be provided as 3 separate MP3 files.
9. Mono recordings are preferable (easier to pan in the mix) unless there is something particularly stereo about the sounds. Please do not put any reverb or other effects (unless that effect is essential to the sound such as distorted guitar) on your tracks. We will add that during the mix. Make sure your recording levels are not too low and not too high. If your recording clips out because you recorded it too high then we will not be able to fix that afterwards and your contribution may be unusable.
10. Have fun!
OK I have placed a list below of musicians who have already showed an interest in taking part in this collaboration and would anyone else who would like to contribute please post in this thread. I will be using this thread to control the project and will be posting updates here regularly.
Many Thanks
Djai

Thanks for that Babble and frankly as one of the original contributors the project would not be the same without you.
If any of you wish to perform the track solo as part of your live shows its the same deal as with Get It Together...you have my total permission as long as you mention the project and more importantly encourage folks to share the same values the project has; educating the wider population of SL to the vibrant and creative in world music scene.

As far as I know, Djai has prepared a notecard with the details and a url to use to download the guide track. He is passing this notecard in-world to musicians that have mentioned that they are interested in contributing.
I'll double-check this with him later.

Thanks for the fantastic response so far everybody. I am in the process of dropping the notecard of instructions on you all (look for Christmas All Year Through in your inventory). If you have expressed an interest to me either directly or via this thread and haven't received anything by the time you read this then please let me know and I will reissue it to you! Wooo exciting!!!

Anyone who has received the instructions please keep the download link to the guide track confidential. I do not want to compromise the finished track by having the guide track distributed to anyone other than those who have a genuine interest in collaborating. One of of the most exciting things last time was seeing everyone anticipating the release of the song so keenly.
At this stage I will also reiterate my request for non musical members of the music scene to make sure the invitation to collaborate is brought to the attention of anyone you think is a candidate!

Congratulations Djai on what you have done and are doing now. I can't participate for reasons that involve none of you and don't need to be described. Many thanks to Cher who has been assisting with the media release.
I regret that you cannot contribute Silas but I appreciate your kind words. Good natured sentiments grown from a shared love of music and creativity are as much a part of these projects as anything else.
Kiaranne and Tommy...when I get home tonight I will add you to the list of collaborators and issue the instructions to you in world. Once you get it please confirm to me that you have it and that you are ok with what you need to do.
I will reiterate to all collaborators to start sending your contributions in as soon as you can. The deadline of 5th December will need to be pretty strict as even then this only gives Toby 16 days to mix the finished song.

Right click the link, and select 'Save taget as' or 'Save Link as'. This should download the file for you.
|
DjaiSkjellerup

I am not sure that is the answer Norris. Franz is entering the url into his browser and it is playing immediately rather than downloading. I just tried right clicking the URL itself but that didnt give me a download option. Franz must something set somewhere to say only play files and not offer a dialog window....

hmm.. Try this.
Go to the web page (use Mozilla Firefox.. i see you said you have it).. let the song play though... go to the File Menu > Save Page As... and save it to your desktop.
Puts the mp3 right there on your desktop (at least it did for me...)

Nice work Norris that sounds like it'll do the trick!
I have maintained dialogue with all the collaborators. I can confirm that Vicki and Carah have both produced first class contributions and that we are on the verge of an avalanche tracks coming from folks that will bury Toby. Someone may need to script a St Bernard that will dig him out and give him a shot of brandy lol!
I may not be able to make individual thanks here whilst the project progresses due to the volume of contributions we get in but please be assured of my continued gratitude to all of you who are taking the time and effort to get it together!

It's the final run in! 3 days to go to get your contributions in. I'll be making a final round of checks on all collaborators in the next couple of days just in case there is anything I can do to help them prior to the expiration of the deadline.
Once we have a definitive list of who has made a contribution either I or Toby will post that list here for everybody to see. I'll then be able to work out timeslots for the party (21st December) that will mark the premier of the song and I will personally contact each contributor to see if you would like to play.
I'll just take a moment here to remind everyone who has been following this project whether you are a contributor, musician or any other music lover that once the song is released it will be your time to help with the most important phase of the project; it's distribution. I will provide a "Christmas Gift From The Musicians Of SL" notecard that will contain the link where you can freely download what we have produced along with information on how to discover and enjoy live music in SL. I will desperately need your help to send it to every friend and acquintance you know! In addition to this I will want you to send it to every group you can as well, especially to non music groups as this is where I believe untapped audience members will be. Before sending it to a group I would ask that you contact the owner or a representative of the group for the following reasons....
1. To ask permission as it would just be plain rude to send a notice out without asking first especially if it is a non music group
2. It might be that the group had notices are switched off and you will need to ask the owner to send the notice for you
3. By going through the owner this should ensure we do not send a notice to the same group more than once
Thanks!

Hey guys.. just a note to let you know (to my great regret) that i won't be able to contribute anything.
I dismantled my 'studio' (ok, basement corner with a bunch of blankets hanging) yesterday, and plan to tear out the floor and stuff.. to remove suspected mold down there.
makes me sad i didn't get my stuff together enough to do it before.... but I'm sure it will be awesome once completed, even without me . I look forward to hearing it, and great work Djai and Toby ... it's incredible stuff that you guys are bringing together for a second time.

Dang, Norris - we'll miss ya!
Ha! We've spoken about the state of my studio before. If it ever gets finished, it'll be GREAT! Designed according to actual acoustics principles. The actual implementation seems to be running behind, however. So I stream to you in a concrete-floored abyss, (double) framing up, but no drywall, with the forced-air heater screaming ten feet away, and the fans of my computer two feet from my guitar mic. Good thing I understand where the nulls are on my mics!
Well, mold is a drag, and you gotta do what you gotta do. Hope to see you on the next!
In the meantime, I just submitted my first two tracks. Hope to get several more in the next two days.
Thanks again to Djai & Toby!

Many thanks to everyone who has sent in contributions. We've received one or more files from the following:
BabbleGrabble Swindlhurst
Carah Nitely
Franz Paine

Kiarranne Flanagan

Mambo Welles
Mimi Carpenter
OhMy Kidd

Tommy Cult

Well, I expect to be spending the long dark winter's nights between now and December 21 listening, mixing, remixing, and probably going back to square one a few times, but hoping to emerge with a great track, where everyone can hear some of what they've sent in.
It's a real privilege to be asked to mix this track, so thanks again to everyone who contributed.

Yikes! Submission bounced!Toby/Djai -
Trawling through my email inbox, I ran across a message indicating my Friday submission bounced, due to mailbox size restriciton at your end. Evidently, (9) mp3 files, @ 128K, each 4+ minutes, is more than your ISP will accept in a single email.
I am splitting these into two sets, and sending them on, in the hopes that they will still be considered for inclusion in the tune.

CAYT Party!!!!!Sorry for the lack of updates here but everything is under control.
The party is all systems go for Nitida Ridge on Sunday 21st Dec starting at Noon SLT with the song being premiered at some point around 3 to 3.30pm slt.

Bree Birke who owns the beautiful venue Nitida Ridge has kindly said that anyone who isn't scheduled but still wants to play then the mic will be open for any of the collaborators to give it a go after the song has been premiered. That open time will be approximately 3.30pm onwards. Thanks Bree for agreeing to let us use your place once again!
I will be coming back to all contributors with the full schedule, LMs and stream details hopefully in the next 24 hours. After that I will post the schedule of artists here.
Thanks for your support!

There is something you could do that would be super useful please Sally and that is to create a notecard similar to what you did before with all your tips and tricks on how to locate and enjoy live music in SL. I could use the version you did for Get It Together and if the information is all the same then just let me know but I wasn't sure if you may have learnt a thing or two since then.
Once I get the notecard from you I will add a paragraph at the top explaining that this is a free Christmas gift and why it is being sent to the reader. I'll include the link where they can download the track and a list of the contributors. It's this notecard that will then be distributed hopefully far and wide in SL starting at the very last note of the song's premiere.
I will not be including so much biographical information on collaborators this time round as that got a bit unwieldy last time and will be even worse now there are 22 in total on this song. Instead when I have a little time in the new year then one idea (Toby's idea actually) is that we will create a Get It Together website as a central repository for all GIT related information.

May I have a copy of the notecard without the link as soon as you are able? I have a ton of ideas for this, including a meeting on Friday in which I would like to announce the project.
I am hosting elsewhere on Sunday at 3 Could we have a break in our event to stream you in for that song?

Obviously I haven't given Sally a chance to answer for herself yet but yes Cher I am pretty sure it will be ok for you to have the notecard very soon as I believe most of the information I have asked Sally for here is already available.
And yes I am happy for the stream at 3pm to be Simulcast over to any other sim anyone would like.
I can see it now...we interrupt our normal programming to bring you this breaking news from Nitida Ridge!!!

.... and I'm pleased (and relieved) to report that apart from adding a bauble or too, and panning the tinsel slightly left, the track is pretty much complete.
Thanks again to everyone who sent stuff in. I had to make some hard decisions along the way, but hopefully you'll be able to hear something of everyone in the end result.

We are nearly there....Toby played me a near enough finished recording yesterday and it's great. He's worked so hard to pull everything together into a cohesive mix. He has done a remarkable job in my opinion but it's now down to you folks to come to the party on Sunday, enjoy yourselves, listen to the song and then help us distribute it grid-wide in the hope that more people will catch the SL live music bug!!!

IF you have any poster or anything announcing the premiere, I'll be happy to put it up at Rocky Shores and Cascadia Harmonics. Also, as soon as that last note fades, drop me a giver thing and I'll drop it at both venues as well.
Cher, if there's anything I can do to help you, you know where and how to find me!!!

Sorry!!!!! Since I haven't managed to get back to SL and prolly won't even be trying until much later now, I suggest you use the existing notecard Djai, can't imagine that much would have changed. The text I got saved here seems pretty accurate still.
Apologies for that!

OK we are nearly there! Party is tomorrow and all final arrangements
are being made. I have just about completed the notecard that will be distributed to everyone, Bree is proof-reading it now.
Thanks to Toby who has now put together a website for the Get It Together projects. It's a bit embryonic at the moment but will feature
more information and collaborator biographies soon.

WidgetsIf anyone would like to add widgets to their web sites, social sites, etc. I have created two versions for the song. One is 160 px wide by 600px tall. It is suitable for sidebars.
The other is a larger widget at 425x350. This is likely suitable for blog posts and full page insertion.
Get them at http://richpalmer.com/rdblog/get-it-together/
There is a small "share" link at the bottom right hand corner of both. It will open an entire listing of web site posting options.
Enjoy!

What a day! It was fun from start to finish and of course I must make a final round of thank yous for sharing your effort and enthusiasm with us all!!! I never realised how many times we would be playing the song! It was such a pleasure after many weeks of hard work and worry.
To all the collaborators thanks for taking the song on board and making it into something special. I cannot single any of you out but I can promise you that I cherished every single contribution that you made as a sign of your dedicated commitment to making live music in SL what it is and hopefully what can it can become! An extra thanks to those that played a set on the day and my apologies to those that wanted to play but could not be accommodated in the schedule.
To Rich Desoto thank you for coming up once more with the extra technical wizardry and making our web prescence so cool via your widgets.
To Cher Harrington for your professional attitude and support to both this project and for bearing the torch so tirelessly for the wider cause of live music in SL.
To Bree Birke thank you for your ceaseless optimism and goodwill. You see the good in all (except maybe the odd griefer lol) and always provide a level headed answer with a giving yet unassuming nature.
To Toby Lancaster thank you from everyone for all you have done for these projects and also personally for the help and guidance you have given me. I know how hard you worked on this, more than anyone can realise. To have persevered and produced such a credible result is once more above and beyond the call of duty. Well that's not quite right as it is not even your duty. It's just that you are a faithful friend who gives his time freely and I am endebted to you.
And finally thanks to all the live music supporters. Please indulge me once more as I now ask that it is your time to make a difference! Please distribute the notecard to everyone on your friends list as a Christmas gift for them and then ask the owners permission of every group you are a member of no matter what the group is for so that you may send the notecard as an attachment on a group notice. Of course also remember to ask the people you send it to to do the same....send it on!! We have only a few days until Christmas and around 5 million avatars to get it to ! Lets make these days count for the SL live music scene like never before!!!!
Keep yourselves safe this festive period. I wish you all a very merry Christmas
