Personally I use a program called GameCam - the lite edition (which i bought) is something stupid like $10... it is a very fast and powerful program that allows you a lot of control over capturing movies.
You can even get a demo to try it out.

Also depending on the specs of the notebook, the performance of the capturing applications might be poorer than a desktop, but if you change the capture window settings to a smaller window then you should be fine

Effective Video CaptureFor PC, FRAPS is the software most used for SL video capture. It licenses for about $30. Note that FRAPS captures video in AVI format which means you will have an extremely difficult time transporting it to any other platform. Encoding is immediate and you can capture one clip after the other with no delay in-between.
For Mac, Snapz Pro is very good and licenses for about $80. Encoding takes place when the clip is saved so this can result in a substantial delay in-between captures. However, the capture is extremely fast so the chance of losing frames is lower than with software that captures and encodes in one pass.
Also for Mac is iShowU and it operates in much the same way as FRAPS so there is no delay between captures. However, it has the same vulnerability to lost frames if your CPU is not fast enough.
Snapz Pro and iShowU capture video in Quicktime format and this makes it a simple matter to capture on a Mac and process on a PC.
Video edits can be performed with iMovie (bundled free with Macs) or on the high-end with Final Cut Studio but it's *very* high-end. For PC, Sony Vegas is adequate and edits are fairly easy.

I second this recommendation. However, I can't currently get the audio to work (I have an M-Audio card). I had it working before I did a reformat, so I will keep tinkering. GameCam is awesome, though. And the price is right.

I keep meaning to try game cam.
I have done a few using SL UI and recording the audio as a separate track. then adding them together with movie maker.
but the SL export is really odd and not of good quality.

FRAPSFRAPS is the video capture software used by most of the machinimatographers in SL although it captures in the skanky AVI format. It will capture at 1280x960 with high-resolution audio. However, experiences of late convince me that the PC is simply not adequate for any serious purpose. I captured 20-30 gigabytes of Virtual Live Band's last gig with Roland and Sony Vegas crashes relentlessly in trying to read various of the captured clips. This has happened before but the clips could be re-shot or trimmed, etc. This time there is no possible replacement.
I've copied the data to the Mac but have not thus far found anything that can convert the AVI to a more professional format. The approach from this point forward will be to use SnapZ Pro to capture on the Mac as it writes Quicktime files which can in turn be read by Final Cut or iMovie, etc.
