Open Mic'sI've been thinking of starting an Open Mic at Sailors Cove. We love to encourage new artists, have a really nice low lag venue and available stream.
I've seen that there are several that happen on a regular basis. Would another be too much? Are musicians really interested? When is a good time?
Any comments, suggestions, yeas, nays, are appreciated

We are one of the venue's that offer Open Mic's weekly. We have had success for the most part. I think lately the "more seasoned" musicians are all busy with the 100's of venue's out there and so many do not do the open mic like they used to. My question is, do they see that it is "beneath them?" to do an open mic? Or not come back to sing because they have already? I guess maybe that is for another strand...anyhow
I have found some pretty amazing musicians in SL, one being my sl hubby KevinBear who will help the new musicians with that end, and I help with trying to get them a crowd to hear them! Many "seasoned" performers got their start on our stage...so I think even helping one musician get heard is worth it. I would like to see the venues get together and pick a day they will do it so we can all coordinate a little to go hear new performers on other venues. I know cryene and I have our open mic on different days so I am able to go to her venue and hear new performers. I love listening to new performers, I just wish more heard about our venue on Tuesday so I can hear more of them.

Nancy, that's a great idea! I love to bring in new musicians too (already have some lined up to premier at Sailors Cove ), but I really enjoy open mic's when I can get to them. Maybe a rotating, weekly open Mic is something that we can coordinate amongst the interested venue owners? Maybe some more seasoned vets would be interested as it would also give them a chance to visit some venues that they maybe haven't seen yet?
anyone else interested?

A new twist on in the round open mic? switching venues weekly.. I like it I sure would be willing to ba a oart of that as a venue and performer.
I have been offering Friday open mics from 6 pm from 9 pm from 10 pm weekly for the past well almost year! ...wow has it been that long I really need to go outside lol...but it has fizzled and the next week or 2 I wont be in SL at all. Like Nancy and kevbear I always am willing to help new players set up shoutcast and get them going I know 2 of the people that used to play mine are now out and doing the bigger venues. I wonder too, if people get "above" them... I don't think I could ever stop doing them as its fun its a little more freeing you can open up and let loose and not worry about I paid you *****L$ for this?

Not to try and horn in here, but this might be a nice fit with Just Plain Folks. It's pretty similar with the road trips and showcases they do. I've been planning on getting something going like that soon - we could certainly use the group to coordinate them, and then use all normal means to announce them.
Here's the site for those who haven't followed along in the thread on JPF yet: http://jpfolks.org/
We could also get some kind of in-world kiosk, or HUD that announced open mics or a google calendar, etc.

Right on Ka-alick
I would love to see some type of "road trip" or community exchange type thing go on with Open mics and such

Can you give a link directly to the thread, I can't seem to find it and there are a lot of posts on their forum.

We hold an Open Mic every Monday at Los Arboles from 6-8pm. I don't know how Yxes would feel about it (she's really the manager of the event; I'm the promo/host guy) but I would think a round-robin thing could be kinda cool.
I try to play them when I have time... but don't seem to have much of that. As it is I'm really only in SL long enough to play my scheduled shows and hopefully catch another here or there from some of the other musicians. Otherwise I'd love to visit and play some more of them.
I NEED to get back to the JPF activities. I've been a member for a few years, but haven't participated in the forum AT ALL. (I'm not a forum fan AT ALL)
However, it's cool that Kaklick is working on some in-world coordination. /me goes off to explore the link and thread.

open micsi started a open mic 13 weeks ago at club anaquad on sunday mornings...jammin in your jammies..... and its been a great sucess! i try to find new artists every week so they have a place to play.but it can be a challenge to find musicians every week, my time is 10-12 or 1 sl time, so helps the euro players also. i thinbk a revolving open mic would be fun, i myself love playing the open mics, gives me a chance to try new material and have some no pressure fun!i know havens is looking to start a new open mic up, maybe we should all get togeather inword there and talk about this new idea?????....call me inworld....dakota
