personal avatarI am wondering if anyone here can recommend someone who makes avatars that I could hire to make an avatar of myself that comes close to what I look like in real life... I have done search for avatars, and it appears that the bizarre and the non-personal are the trend...
I've asked a couple of people who had a nice avatar and they couldn't recommend anyone... I didn't want to create antagonism by saying something like "Well, who created YOUR avatar??".. I figured they wanted to keep that a secret, or maybe they made it themselves...
So, all I'm looking is to pay somebody who makes avatars, that you could give them a picture of two and get something in the ballpark of that... I'm not looking for an exact replica... Just something better than what I have now... Any info appreciated, thanks...

I remember reading an article about somebody who commissioned an avatar maker in SL to make a realistic avi of Sir Arthur Connan Doyle (the Sherlock Holmes author). It was fascinating and sounded incredibly skilled work. But I once actually saw the avatar at an arts festival inworld. He looked great!
Unfortunately, I cannot remember the person who created the avi.

Yep, I think most people create their own. Myself, I've never bought a shape, I just used "appearance mode" until I got what I liked (and I've changed it several times). There are folks out there that make them, but you'd have to figure out the right places to search.
Maybe try asking in the main Second Life forum (at SecondLife.com).

It can take some shopping around, but if you search for 'skins' and 'shapes' in shopping you'll find lots of raw material. If the shapes are editable (and most are I believe) you can adjust all the features to look more like yourself.
That's what I did and while my av is not exactly me, she's close enough that people comment on it.
Some things people tend to adjust for SL even when they want to "be themselves" - such as height. I think the average av height is 7'1" so if you're a 6' tall guy in RL, you'll look like a shrimp in SL.
I believe Edderedde Laval had an avatar made with his actual image on it. It looks a little odd in the SL environment, but it you wouldn't mistake him for anyone else.
I know one person who made himself an avatar with a cube for a head and put a live video feed of his face on it. That was a trip!

Well, I'm fortunate in that I"m tall and slim... So, hopefully that makes it easy in avatar creation land... I don't have to look EXACTLY like in real life, but at least similar hair do, clothes, that sort of thing... But if I should run into anyone who says, yeah, I can make you look like in real life, I'll definitely let you know...

Wow, I would definitely love seeing that... At one point I was heavily in reading Conan Doyle... Maybe someday I'll check him out..

Right and that was more of what I was looking for, similar hair, similar body type... I"m starting out with the Goth model, but get rid of the hair, the clothes, elongate the body, put more self effacing clothes and eventually get something closer, but I can only get the other stock short hair...
Funny story, when I first joined, I grabbed the goth without changing the look, not knowing how, cause I figured it would be closer to a rock person... I didn't know that there is this IMMENSE pseudo vampire culture in second life... Not 5 minutes went by when I didn't get some chick asking me if I was a vampire and if I wanted to join their brood... And these people took this VERY seriously... I thought they were kidding... anyway, I changed into the college kid and people left me alone...
But yeah, I'm still not happy and if with a little bit here and there, I can change to just a closer represenation of me, then it's ok... I'll try shopping for bits and pieces...

Hey, that's very cool Nad... At one point I was heavily into graphic arts and it would have been a cinch for me ot use somehting like this... But it's been years since I've done any visual arts on the computer... But still, it's good to know... They do this sort of stuff in Poser all the time... But it's just that in second life, they can't handle the polygon count of a poser figure... (Poser is a computer graphics program for generating people)

Yes, that's an idea, the main second life forum... I just concentrate on the music aspects of second life so much, I forget that people do other things there... And that there's a forum...

They're still there, but a little pricier than I would like... IN any event, I met someone last night that showed me a lot of places that with a little bit of mix and matching, I can get something that resembles me closer to real life, which is really all i want... And I'm going to try the cyberextruder that Nad recommended....
