|
|
As I have it on good word that it may be wise to get my own Ninjam server if I choose to keep messing with this past a planned ticketed concert with Komuso the first week of May, I'm considering setting up a Ninjam Server.
I already eat up the balance of my available 2000MB of bandwidth a month on my dedicated web hosting server by running my own private SHOUTcast stream. That machine hosts our popular website, http://appleproaudio.com plus various other websites for myself and friends. I'd venture to say running Ninjam on it is going to eat up the bandwidth pretty fast.
So I'm slumming through the latest MacWorld rag and see an ad for a webserver for $88 a year, a virtual hosted account, and its offering 3000MB of transfer a month. I figure 3GB might be enough for this each month.
Anyone done the math on the bandwidth use for a typical Ninjam show with say, three people for two hours?
Anyone interested in sharing the Ninjam server with me if I buy it upfront? I could split the costs for the hosting out among a couple of other folks, with me paying up front and the people sharing it just hitting me with the Lindens to use it. |

http://www.nomonthlyfees.com/add_on.htm - Get fat: $200 a month for a dedicated server with 100 GB monthly traffic.
or...
http://www.nomonthlyfees.com/index.html - $200 ONCE for 35 GB per month forever. (I've been with them for years and they've been stable. Unknown how long forever might be however.)
Alternate plan: $100 annually with same config as $200 deal. (Includes, as does the $200 offer, 900 MB of storage)
Budget plan: $75 a year for 25 GB and 600 MB of storage.
Full Web-hosting is included with all of the packages. SQL is supported, etc., etc.
NO required advertising on your site or your email. Blah, blah... _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

NINJAM Client:
The NINJAM client requires a fair amount of CPU power, a moderate amount of inbound bandwidth (192kbps for a typical 4 person jam, 512kbps for an 8 person jam) and less outbound bandwidth (100kbps typical).
NINJAM Server:
The main requirement for running the server is outbound bandwidth. For example, a 4 person jam needs approximately 768kbps of outbound (and only 240kbps inbound) bandwidth, and a 8 person jam requires approximately 3mbps of outbound (and 600kbps inbound) bandwidth. We are planning on updating the architecture to support a more distributed model, but this is just an alpha release.

Hi!
I just looked up the records of my traffic reports. One concert/session can be something between 300 MByte and 1 GByte roundabout - depends on time used and the number of channels to be transmitted
Hope you all know, that there is a ninjam server on the SLMIC and there will come more.
Limited access also possible and musicians decide, if the want to make their music CC (see entry message on the Nnjam farm).
Those who want to test the connection to the data center where the server is in in general can do that with my test streaming server (ask for the notecard inworld).
On request I can do the streaming, if you want to make a concert using ninjam (if I have time, at least).
Al, Junivers, Way and others have already used the server for private jamming and concerts successfully.

I dunno about anything ninjam, but I know everything about hosting audio servers and getting the most out of em.
I am an option, but I'm not exactly certain what you need.
What I do know is:
I could have a server for you with unlimited usage, & setup for shoutcast audio (or technically anyway you'd want it to be)
for like $100usd a month.
i think i may be missing something, silas and von will prob fill me in....
but I host/run/maintain 3 servers total. 2 are physically touchable at my location, and one is an affiliate I work with in SL. One of the 3 is not in use at all right now.
So.... all 3 insane super reliable.
Just get into specifics more about what you need or might need...
cause for me, I have no reason to not have you have unlimited everything.... no caps. use it as much as you want, as heavy as you want, you could probably get at least 150 ports working totally fine on em all streaming at the same time 24/7.... and it'd be like $100usd maybe 200 max..
currently my filestorage service is like $2usd a YEAR per GB. and after we hit like 50gb, it turn into 50cents....
the one other thing I can do is charge based on use AFTER. I dont think anyone ever does that.
silas' 'alternate plan' is lookin good... but perhaps we can figure out a way I can serve your needs for the lowest cost and highest quality.
I'm quite positive I'm in the highest tier of quality and customer service when it comes to my stream servers. The stream team is the only other in SL that I feel has the quality and customer service also.
I really think the customer service is the most important. I'm in SL like 14 hrs a day, any problem that comes up, you can IM the dude staring at the actual servers, and work on it together. I'm positive that's the reason that my streams, and the stream teams service have been so consistant for so long.
So, reply here with some specifics, and I'll see where I come in in the rankings. _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

DD, Sorry if there was any misunderstanding but I'm not offering any kind of streaming service. The only point to my entry was that Johin could get much better performance for a lot less money. Likely the best one to talk to on the subject would be Swina Allen as he's running a test ninjam server all the time.
If I were to contract for a ninjam server, it would certainly be through you or the stream team. I don't know Swina very well but his generosity in offering a test ninjam stream for free to people shows his motivation very well. You might want to work with him as his interest is most likely performance and yours appears to be infrastructure so that's a possible love connection. _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

Nooooooooo. I'm saying I AM the one who is offering the streaming and hosting and filestorage services. I have what I think Von needs.
and I was saying, you Silas, may be able to help me understand better what Von wants. I mean, I can set up a server for Von exactly how he wants, and get a price on it.
So, yeah Silas I was asking for your advice on the streams.. not that you actually offer them... but you gave him several options. And I'm also an option. So let me know your advice, or, give me what the dream specs would be, and I can see what prices i can deliver to see if I'm a less expensive & more effective option. _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

Sorry, bro, I'll have to recuse myself from any discussion of Johin. I responded previously because I didn't want it to look like I was ignoring you. _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.
