Just curious, but as a performer in SL, how often do you find yourself asking for tips? Some people have a set routine. Some people do a beginning, middle, and end thing. Some people play it by ear by how many tips they are getting. How often do you find yourself reminding on average? _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

I never do.
I do ask the patrons to tip the venue 3-4 times. (not in my own though as the tip board has my name on it lol)
I don't know how well it works out. _________________ "Being drunk is a good disguise.

I don't ask but I thank everyone who does and let them know after the first one that tips are split with the venue. I'll tell them multiple times about the tipjar for the venue regardless. _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

I very, very rarely have ever heard an artist ask for tips for themselves at my venue (and I've been doing this for 9 months).
On the other hand, I pimp tips for the artist on my stage generally four times in a one hour set, roughly on the quarter hour beginning during the second song. The reason I say generally is that, if the musician has a manager or helper in the audience doing it, I scale back so as not to alienate the audience. I also keep an eye on the artist's tip jar. If tips are sucky, I'll pimp a couple extra times and a push a bit harder...if tips are good, I'll offer invites to my group instead (but that means the artist has already made over 3k in tips and the tips are still coming).
And so all of you performers know, and a couple of you have told me you didn't realize this, when you ask the crowd to tip the venue, there's a flood of tips to the venue tip jar. Sometimes, those tips are the only tips that come in to the venue the whole show. My total tips have about doubled since some of you began doing that. We totally love you for taking the time and making the effort. _________________ Joy is in the ears that hear

No pie option on the poll. Invalid results.
I like pie.

I guess I shoulda rephrased the poll.... and HTB is right, it's an invalid poll anyway..
what i meant to ask was how often during your set are you mentioning to option for people to tip you, the venue, donate, support.. that sorta thing.
Me, for example, I ask for tips/ask for venue donations about 3 times an hour, but then just give my tip bucks to the venue anyway (or sometimes keep some bucks for other tipping throughout the day). I don't usually mention on the mic that I do give my tips to the venue though. My thought being, I like to see and thank the people that tip me. _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

I hardly ask for tips. Basically my billboard has links to my myspace, CD, free stuff and a tips section... so I just anounce what's in the billboard and ppl tip me soon afterward. The venue owner or my manager would suggest to the audience to support the 'fine, hardworking artist'. Works ok for me. _________________ Free you mind and the rest will follow |

My style is pretty much the same as ticious. I ask the crowd to tip the artist about every quarter hour, and more often if the tips are not looking that good (that is, if I can tell, some don't use tip jars that say how much is in them)
I have noticed that many more musicians are asking the crowd to tip the venue, that's a really huge thing and very much appreciated.
One other thing that I noticed, I went out and bought a host hud so I don't have to wear my fingers out typing all the time, but I've realized that it's not really working that well. I find that if I personally type it out and shout it, the results are much better. Another thing I try to do is throw in some humor and keep the crowd pumped up and excited. _________________ Just call me Jo

Jojamela, I've thought about getting a host hud. But LOTS of people have told me that what they love about Rocky Shores and what makes it such a fun place to be is me be so 'involved'. Canned messages can come from an object, you don't even have to be there. I think the audience feels a big difference.
Now, the artist on the stage is the real draw. There are some artists who, when they're on my stage, I can go take a nap and not worry about the crowd. But my regulars tell me, again and again, that my involvment is what makes Rocky Shores 'such a great place to be'.
I also ask my hired hosts no to use canned messages. The personal touch is too important. _________________ Joy is in the ears that hear

I'll only ask for tips maybe twice during each song and have found that sobbing right up close to the mic has a huge impact. It's helpful to develop a "story of the set" to use so you don't get repititious. Like "I'm saving to get my mom that spleen she's been needin for 8 years now - poor woman has only two of her spleens in werking order", or "I've not eaten in 3 weeks because the only income I have is from the tips that you so generalessly give". Another effective technique I use is threats. Like "if I don't get x Lindies in the next 5 minutes I'm taking the host hostage!" (note the rootness of the werd hostage - very effective subliminally) , which is easy to get away with when the host is using one of those HUD thingies, cause there is no prepared response to that. When you can parlay maultiple stories into one yer bound for the jackpot like, [thick sobbage] "I've been eating toasted cardboard for like 3 weeks and if I dont get 100 or more lindies outta each of you during this next song I'm taking the host hostage and will donate their spleens to me mum! So stop tossin yer tips into the venue's tip jar - help keep the music free dammit!" _________________ This text appears at the bottom of my posts. |
