Hi folks,

I'm not sure if it's Leopard it self or not, but I bought a new MacBook this week for my wife. Second Life crashes the whole computer (I have to re-start the whole machine) after I log-in and begin to see SL begin to draw it self in aabout 5-10 seconds the computer comes to a total freeze.

I wonder if SL just does not work with Leopard
OR
Is it a problem with the graphics card in the new MacBook which other wise seems to be working well with everything else. So far the MacBook seems to be a wonderful machine, super fast and the graphics are really clean.

I love Leopard...

My personal Mac (iMac G5) runs OSX 10.3.9 and runs SL no problem.

Any ideas?

Well, I can tell you right now that my mostly brand new MacBook Pro runs SL just fine using 10.4.1, so it's not the computer/graphics card.

But I've heard from other folks running SL with Leopard, so I don't know what to tell you there.

The word "Pro" is conspicuously absent in your ref to the new laptop. In this case there is an important distinction, in that the plain MacBook line (not the MacBook Pro line) only has built in intel video that uses shared system ram as vram - it is not (to my knowledge) a supported configuration for SL. The "Pro" line have real dedicated vram on thier nVidia or ATI chipset adapters.

Ah... a huge distinction indeed. Missed that at first read.

Ah.......the graphics card in my wife's MacBook is not supported. OK..well that explains it.

You know the funny thing is......I've used SL on maybe 6 different computers mostly Macs but a couple of them were Wndows. I've never seen SL load faster or look better than it does on the new MacBook. Too bad that after a few seconds it makes the MacBook Freeze. : (

Oh well........my wife uses it for other things anyway. I've got my iMac G5 that is about 4 years old but runs SL just fine. I do wonder if at some point SL might support the graphics card on the MacBook? I have 4 friends that have them. They are musicians that tour the country in bands. They love them becuase they run Pro Tools and Logic quite well. Hopefully enough MacBooks will get sold so that SL will start to make them work.

Thanks.
Morris

The problem is that it's one of those "built-in" type cards that uses regular system RAM for it's video memory, which I think may be the bottleneck and probably the reason they don't support it. Intel graphics are all over the place in the PC world already, so I don't think it's a market share issue. I didn't see how much system RAM you had, but it might help to really bump it up. You can also lie to SL (downward) about the amount of VRAM you have in preferences. Try stepping down through those choices and see if it helps. I've seen SL work on a first rev Intel mini before, for a decent period of time, so it's possible to use the chipset, but don't expect breathtaking performance or support. It really might well all be fine if you just crank all the settings down to a level that won't tax it much, and max out your system RAM as much as you can.

Great idea. I'll try messing around more with the SL preferences to see if I can make ith work with the macbook.

The MacBook has 2gb of ram built in. Maybe more would help but for everything else (GarageBand, Logic, Ableton Live), the 2gb of ram seems to be plenty so far.

I'll try and mess around with SL to see if I can slow it down a bit.

Thanks

Back to topic: I made the move to Leopard, and I'm really loving it so far. The reason I upgraded had nothing to do with SL; rather, I just got Adobe Creative Suite 3 for my real job (marketing/advertising/web design/etc.) and it's optimized to run under Leopard.

But of course, one of the first things I did after installing and updating it on my 2.4GHz MBP was to try SL. My first impression is that SL seems to run really well under Leopard... much better than 10.3 or 10.4. Textures rendered quickly, movement was smooth, and I did a few things that tended to crash me before... some fast zooming around, multiple quick TPs, and more -- and it was fine.

So, thumbs up (so far) for Leopard and SL!
