I'd been having weird problems streaming. I use nicecast withthe application set for garageband. It got worse last night. When I was not broadcasting I could hear a track play on Garageband. When I clicked the Start broadcasting button in nicecast all the meters looked like everything was working and I could hear my microphone but no track.
After much sleuthage I finally deleted
~/library/preferences/com.rogueamoeba.Nicecast.plist
and violagements! the problems all disappeared. However, as I knew would happen, all of my stream setups were lost.
Given that this can happen anytime and the hassle of getting the stream information collected and re-entered I am suggesting you periodically back up ~/library/preferences/com.rogueamoeba.Nicecast.plist so that you have a working copy to restore in the event yers gets corrupted.
This will allow you to drag a working copy of this file into ~/library/preferences/ anytime you think you may have a corrupted plist file, and restore order to yerself and to the werld at large.
I am now following my suggestion. |

Probably a good idea. I back up the whole mcgillacutty on occasion, assuming the plist and associated files are safe and sound.

Time Machine, gents. A thing of beauty, it is. Unfortunately, it ain't free as you needs to give it enough disk spaceage to be fatter'n what you gots on other disks. (I'm guessing it might be time I should be stoppin' talkin' like this??)
Damn shame to know that Nicecast was ugly to you. Blowing away plists will many times fix problems but it sure is a shame all your configs poofed with it. Might be worth an email to the author to ask for an export function in Nicecast to address this. I took a quick gander at it but I don't see nuffin' in it now what will do that. In fact, I'm going to email them too.
Update: I used the Contact Support function in Nicecast and requested an Import/Export function but their sleuthage will require more information about your system, etc for debugging so it'll be helpful to them if you do that as well, Nad. (The Contact Support function automatically includes information about your system config)

One of the biggest problems in disaster recovery, any size system, is that a corrupted file can get through the backup process and then you end up with bad data on both ends and no way to recover.
The beauty of Time Machine is that it can literally step backward incrementally through time until you find a copy that works. It's a hefty whack but I got a Western Digital 2 TB external Firewire drive for this purpose and backup is virtually transparent. Plus, it looks cool as hell when start the app and go into the Time Machine.

Yeah the first thing i looked for was the export import feature. I dont have time machine because i am waiting for you guys to get all the quirks werked outta 10.5 before i commit.
oh btw, i found out tonite - fortunately DImi had me do an early sound check - that the trashed plist has the reg info too - i woulda gotten the white noise after 20 minutes thing. After rigling thru my emails unsuccessful to get my code i went to the nice cast page. Wow! ferget yer code? enter yer email address and we will send it to you immdiately. I did and they did and I got not only my nicecast code but my audio hijack pro code as well - nice system that. |

After the recent fix to Quicktime, Leopard has been working perfectly. I had been having immense problems with it but they've disappeared and it's been prob'ly a month now. Since I was seeing symptoms every day, sometimes multiple times in a gig, I'm calling it cured.

Invalid Poll as there is no PIE option!
I've been pretty happy w/ Leopard once I got my Alesis drivers fixed up.
I just turned on Time machine a few days ago, and haven't needed to restore yet, but I like having that peace of mind. |
