Hi! Ok...I have read everything here, and I am still a bit confused.
Honestly, I can barely play guitar, and manage to squeak out a decent approximation of a howler monkey on Lunesta. It only seems fair to want to share the experience with all of SL.
I am very poorly equipped for it though, and need help with a shopping list.
What I have:
- Guitar (Gretsch 5120)
- Amp modeller (Behringer V-Amp 2)
- Laptop (Where I do all of my SL-ing)
I haven't tried to set up to even record yet. So this is where I need to start I think.
Things I might need. (help?)
Mixer? (I really only need to combine guitar and voice.)
Decent mic? (Something not very expensive, but better than my $10 X-mart headset)
Drum machine? (I have no idea how to use these!)
Also, I've heard of something called a LightSnake that has a 1/4" plug on one end and USB on the other. It's supposed to let you feed an instrument directly into a computer. Is that useful for this?
What about doing 2 stages? Recording the guitar track, and then playing it while singing live over it? Would that change what I need?
Ideally, I'd like to start with things that are already known to be fairly easy to set up to work with the streaming audio stuff. That way I don't waste the little money I have for this, and I can focus on getting as clear and pure a howler monkey sound as I can manage.
Thanks for any help!
(Then again you might *not* want to help. My next question would be: "Ok, now I can stream...how do I find a place willing to let a howler monkey sing modern christian music?!") |

I can't answer the tech stuff, but the answer to B is open mics! There are still lots of them around, but I'm not real sure where they go to find musicians to fill their lineup. The Hummingbird Cafe waits for musicians to come to them, but being the longest continuously running open mic in SL (and probably the best attended) has it's advantages.
Then there's the Merry Prankster. They haven't been around quite as long as the Hummingbird, but are also extremely well established and attended.
For the rest, occasionally you'll see one publicised here and occasionally you'll see a musician's call go out either in the Live Music Enthusiast or Independant Musicians groups. Sometimes you'll see a call for musicians go up in the event listings, but that's an abuse of the event lisitings and usually signals someone new who doesn't actually know what they're doing .
But anyways, short answer: Look for open mics and, whilst your getting your stream stuff going, attend as many as you can, introduce yourself to the organisers and see which seem to suit you. _________________ Joy is in the ears that hear

Hey There.
this is a good start.. if you haven't read it yet. It does cover a lot of ground.
http://slmc.myfastforum.org/about711.html
and here is another good one...
http://slmc.myfastforum.org/about283.html
I'd read and re-read those a few times first.
Basically... you've got two steps.
1st -- get the sound INTO your computer somehow (via guitars, mics, mixers, CD with backing tracks, etc)
2nd -- get the sound from your computer streamed into SL (you stream from your computer to a Shoutcast server.. and the server re-distributes the stream to everyone listening)
There's a ton of variables for each of those steps, but if you can get your head around those two things, decide how simple or complex you want to make them, and then start off on the journey to howler monkey performance... |
