So we all know we get 25 groups max. We all also are probably tired of the insane number of group notices each time we log on (but I think most of us do appreciate the essence of group notices but not particularly how they actually work.)
The question is, is it better to get thousands into a few music related groups? or is it better to keep em diverse so each music group has less?
Personally, I don't really join any one musician's fan group... and I dont really join any one venue's vip group. I think Circe Circle Radio is the one group that's venue speciific I'm still a member of...
.. but then there's a LOT of music groups.... LME, Independant musicians, second life music, second life music network, music afficianatos, etc etc... then there's all the DJ groups too: LTDJ, Live djs, united djs, etc etc.....
so, is it better to try to consolidate the groups? or better to keep things how they are? Is a 50-100 person promo/event/performance group effective? Is a 1000+ person group that doesn't work half the time effective? _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

Pros and Cons for both I think.
I think artists specific groups play an important part in artist promotion - it's one of the first things i encourage new artists to do. Maximize your fan group and you got a portable audience to take with u wherever you play, it's also a route of communication with your fans, send them freebies, invites etc. Make them feel loved!
Venue specific groups are also important to raise awareness of your venue and increase attendance - but if i had to promote a group during a performance, it would be the artist fan group.
Genre specific groups are probably useful if you are only interested in specific types of music and don't want spam from stuff you are not interested in.
For the more generic groups it would make sense to consolidate - no point having 100 different Live Music or DJ/electronica groups. However you just might need to endure increased spam. But that is the price to pay for staying in the know. _________________ The ViBe

Let me inject a little bit of reality regarding consolidation which has nothing to do with the problems of group IM and notices in large groups and a whole lot to do with human nature.
If we could convince all the groups currently involved in the music community to consolidate (and that's a HUGE if, I'll bet there are plenty of group owners who won't want to go along), AND if we could convince all members of all groups to join the new behometh (again, a HUGE if), a week later, you'd have a whole 'sprouting' of new groups and the cycle would begin afresh. This will be true as long as people are free to create groups.
Then we have to have this whole conversation all over again . _________________ Joy is in the ears that hear

I think that if someone is really into music they will eventually find the groups that uniquely suit them and we can't really change that no matter what. I found that after joining a lot of the consolidated groups that I just get multiple notices for every single show, like clockwork, so I dropped a few of them.
A suggestion that I had for this earlier, which only one person responded to pretty negatively, was that we try to set some standards in the big groups to help keep the notices from becoming overwhelming. My suggestion was to limit performers to one post per week which should include all of their shows that week, hopefully in a notecard, but could also go in the notices box, sure.
By doing this, each performer only has to visit those groups once per week and you get less people dropping the group out of IM exhaustion. This works EXTREMELY well in the FashCon group, which has thousands of members now. I'm pretty impressed with them. _________________ Thaumata Strangelove (SL)

On the DJ groups side of things I think it's working fairly well.
The big DJ groups are Live Turntable DJs &
Ravers & Electronic Music fans
.. those two groups pretty much have everyone in em, which is cool.
Then there's a bunch more specific smaller groups (relating to either genres of music, the venue, or the DJ) _________________ DJ Doubledown on The Sixty-One ~ SL DJ & Club Scene Blog

i wish we could join more groups....
i already have about 10 for the stuff i own.
got some shops here and there and need those groups to maintain the shops
i like the notices,
and it is not that i get loads off messages.
i think a max of 10 a day.
the chat is also very low.....
might be the groups i join
have no problem with it, sometimes it even gets me to a place that i wasnt planning visiting.... _________________ ~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~

I think the problem with notecards with a weeks worth of a schedule is it gets forgotten. Many times I have gone to a performance just because it was mentioned in the LME - 'Bla bla coming up in 15 minutes get your ass there now!' I dunt think many people plan their SL day ahead of time. Many people just log in for a good time and go to the closest running events if at all. I could be wrong on that - i am sure someone will tell me
Spam in the LME isn't bad - usually you get a small rush of notifications at the start of the hour and that's it. To me that is the definitive group for Live Music events. _________________ The ViBe

The first thing I do when I login is to click through all the group notices and I don't read any of them. I know Telia does that too and I suspect a great many others as well. If I go to someone's gig, it's hardly ever because of a notice. When I want some jams, I'm going to Live Music and will figure it out from there. That's why I get so bent about DJ listings in there. _________________ Ever vigilant for da gooses overhead.

Yes the notices are a pain - especially when I have e-mails in my inbox telling me I had inventory offers and friend requests - but when I log in I find they were actually capped and all I actually have is news about who I missed on stage last night.
The only way around that will be to persuade LL to let us exclude group notices from being stored when we're not online _________________ Decafalon (n): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. |

I agree with all the above. But, SL could delete the notice after sending the email (or not post the notice at all if you are not online ... just send you an email).
If you are interested in it at all after looking at your mail, you can go back the the group and review it. _________________ Ray
